PLIDA

Progetto Lingua Italiana Dante Alighieri

PLIDA (Dante Alighieri Italian Language Project) is a certification degree released from the Dante Alighieri Society according to an agreement with the italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs (n.1903 - 04/11/1993). The PLIDA attests competences in Italian as a foreign language on a scale of six levels, which represent the relative phases of learnig. These six levels, from A1 to C2, in progression of difficulty, correspond to the levels of the Common European Framework.

From the table of levels is possible to obtain also the equivalence of each level in comparison to the parameters of the IV Modern Languages Division of the Council of Europe as indicated in the document: Modern Languages: Learning, Teaching, Assessment. A Common European Framework of Reference, Strasburgo 1998 (rif. CC-LANG (9%) 5 rev. V).

There are two PLIDA certification programs: PLIDA and PLIDA Juniores.

The PLIDA certification program, intended for adults, offers exams for levels A2, B1, B2, C1 and C2.

The PLIDA Junior exams, however, are dedicated to girls and boys between 13 and 18 years old. The PLIDA Junior tests are constructed taking into consideration texts and contexts of language use appropriate to the age of the candidates.

The exam levels proposed in the PLIDA Juniores certification are A1, A2, B1, B2.

Although its structure is the same as the ordinary PLIDA certificate (of which it also maintains institutional validity), the contents of the exam tests have been designed to adapt to communication contexts suited to the age of the participants. The creation of a specific certification for young people derives from their different daily experience which reflects communication problems more linked to family, school and in any case poorly formal relationships than to working and generally formal contexts typical of the adult world.

The junior PLIDA levels range from A1 to B2 and correspond both in difficulty and in the consequent evaluation to the first four levels envisaged by the Common European Framework of Reference of the Council of Europe.

The absence of the C1 and C2 levels present in the other certifications is motivated by the fact that, providing this as a linguistic competence suitable for any professional field, it is not possible to establish their achievement through the use of communication contexts restricted to a limited scope. The difficulty of the level of linguistic competence and the consequent evaluation does not vary in the slightest between the PLIDA exam and the PLIDA Juniores (as can be seen from the Syllabus), since the changes concern exclusively the communicative contexts presented.

Teaching approach

The exams for the P.L.I.D.A. certificate they are based on the principles of the communicative approach and are based on the practice of daily life, which requires the use of the four basic skills: listening, reading, writing, speaking. The communicative situations to which learners are exposed vary considerably in their difficulty: they range from areas of immediate daily life to highly qualified professional sectors.

Target audience

To be able to register for the exam in a specific band, it is not necessary to have passed the previous stages. Each candidate chooses the level that they think corresponds to their language skills.

Passing the exam and evaluation

The exam is considered passed if the candidate reaches a minimum score of 18/30 in each of the four basic skills (listening, reading, writing, speaking). The minimum total score is 72/120, the maximum score is 120/120. The candidate who obtains an average of 18/30 grades in only one, two or three of the four skills acquires a credit that will allow him to review the skill(s) he lacks within 365 days.

In order to register for the remediation sessions, candidates will be required to register partially. The marks obtained in or in the test passed will be merged with the mark or marks considered valid in the previous session. To find out in detail what you need to know how to do to pass the PLIDA exam for the various levels, see the PLIDA certification syllabus.

Final results

The results are communicated to the exam center by the PLIDA Società Dante Alighieri office in Rome (which corrects the tests of all the committees in the world) within 60 working days of receipt of the tests.

Candidates will be informed by their examination center, who will send them the diploma by post. The candidate can also request a correction and/or priority shipping of the certificate: for further details please contact the Secretariat.
